The School of Life Sciences arranged a study tour to icddr,b on March 21, 2016. A total of 20 senior students along with two faculty members toured the Mucosal Immunology and Vaccinology unit of icddr,b and ideSHi. At the beginning of the tour Dr. Taufiqur Rahman, Senior Scientific Officer from the Mucosal Immunology and Vaccinology lab formally welcomed the visiting IUB group and briefed them about the goals and research activities of the unit. Afterwards the students were grouped for a walking tour throughout the unit. Later, the students were taken to ideSHi, the Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives where they were given a powerpoint presentation on the mission, activities and facilities of ideSHi by Dr. Kaiissar Mannoor, Scientist and Head of the Lab. Students visited the lab and were briefed about research on Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM), Hereditary Neurological Diseases (HND), G6PD Deficiency, and Respiratory & Enteric Infections. The tour was a wonderful opportunity for the students to observe the cutting edge research being done in Bangladesh and its possible impact on health care diagnostics, prevention, and treatment.
